
“Boxers, Bandits and a Blind Beggar” (A history of Bethnal Green) – Bethnal Green was a medieval hamlet to the east of the City of London. It became popular with rich merchants in the 16th century but serious immigration began in the 18th century and by the end of the 19th century foreign immigration had turned Bethnal Green into an over-populated scene of poverty and degradation.
Historic Greenwich – – In the last 2500 years, Greenwich has been a Celtic settlement, a Viking stronghold, a royal estate, a home for navy veterans, even a smugglers den, and the home of the royal observatory. In the nineteenth century, Greenwich grew into a commuter town and now a popular tourist attraction. This talk traces the history of Greenwich from the first Celtic settlement to the present day.
